Tolle was born in Lunen, Germany and raised in an unstable family environment where his parents often clashed and he suffered severe depression at a very young age. To cope with his emotions at home he studied astronomy, languages and literature at home until moving to London at 19 and enrolling at University College London to further pursue his research passions; later teaching German and Spanish during short stints.
After struggling for many years with mental illness, Tolle experienced an amazing inner transformation which forever altered his view of life. Over the course of several years he spent understanding and accepting this change; during which time he met Kim Eng and settled together in Vancouver, Canada.
The couple maintains an extremely private relationship, refusing to divulge any details of their intimate life to the media or share any children together. According to various accounts, Eng was one of Tolle's students for some time before they started dating; she now serves as his wife and is recognized as a spiritual teacher herself.
